A recent study highlighted in The American Journal of Managed Care found that diets high in inflammatory and oxidative potential — measured using the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and Dietary Oxidative Balance Score (DOBS) — are significantly associated with increased skin cancer risk and faster biological aging. In simple terms, what we eat appears to influence long-term cancer risk and aging through inflammation and oxidative stress. This finding is notable because, while chronic inflammation and oxidative stress have long been linked to disease risk factors, fewer studies have directly connected diet-driven inflammation and oxidation to real-world disease outcomes.

Findings like this are becoming more common as large health databases mature. Decades of collected blood biomarkers, dietary records, and long-term health outcomes are now making it possible to connect inflammatory and oxidative dietary patterns with real disease risk. As the data improves, the signal is getting harder to ignore — diet-driven inflammation and oxidative stress matter.

That said, indices like DII and DOBS are population-level rules of thumb. They describe average risk across thousands of people — not how your body responds to your food choices. What triggers inflammation or oxidative stress in one person may be neutral (or even beneficial) in another. Assuming the same foods affect everyone the same way is convenient, but biologically unrealistic.
